In 2003, Dr. Brian Jacobs of Bellevue Medical Imaging conducted a retrospective study of his first 5000 mammogram patients, to determine if the addition of bilateral screening breast ultrasound following bilateral screening mammogram would find additional breast cancers in patients with dense breasts.

The study showed that, with the addition of screening breast ultrasound, an additional 30% more cancers were detected.

These cancers were all invasive tumors, often in younger women, that could not be seen, even in retrospect, on their mammogram.

Very few centers are willing to provide screening breast ultrasound following mammograms in women with dense breasts. Bellevue Medical Imaging’s standard of care is to offer mammogram and breast ultrasound in the same appointment. Early detection saves lives!

EXAMPLE:

A 40-year-old patient came to Bellevue Medical Imaging for a screening ultrasound. She had a baseline mammogram at an outside hospital that showed very dense breast tissue, and was read “normal”, even though little detail of breast anatomy could be seen.

The patient requested an ultrasound from the outside facility, but was refused.

Our ultrasound revealed a large breast cancer.
